Miami, FL - A group of elected officials have come out today to announce their support for the candidacy of Gary Johnson, the Libertarian former Governor of New Mexico running for President of the United States.
The group represents four different districts and over 75,000 voters in Miami-Dade County.
Gary Gerstein, Community Councilman from Fisher Island, endorsed Governor Johnson and his running mate, Bill Weld, former Governor of Massachusetts, calling the duo "an outstanding alternative." Councilman Gerstein has been in office since 2014.
Another Community Councilman, Keon Grayson, who was elected earlier this year, announced his endorsement of the Libertarian ticket. Councilman Grayson said, "To my constituents, the most important issues in 2016 are economic growth and criminal justice reform. Governor Johnson is the only presidential candidate that offers a real plan with working solutions and I am confident he will bring to Washington the same type of leadership he had in New Mexico." Grayson was elected in June in North Central, the large, mostly-African American district encompassing all the unincorporated areas between Miami International Airport and the North Campus of Miami-Dade College.
Councilman Grayson has been appointed as Director of African American Outreach of the Johnson campaign in South Florida.
Marialexandra Garcia, of Doral, also joined in endorsing the presidential campaign on Thursday, stating "My vote this November is for the only candidate who is honest and is confident enough to admit when he's wrong and smart enough to know who he should surround himself with." Garcia was elected earlier this year as a member of the Board of Supervisors of one of the largest Special Taxing Districts in Doral, the Islands at Doral Community Development District.
Also joining the group was Marco Alvarez, Jr., an Iraq War veteran who sits on the Board of Supervisors of the Century Gardens Village Community Development District. "As a Military Veteran, an American, and as a Father, I too care about the direction of our Country. That is why I am endorsing Governor Gary Johnson for President of the United States of America, It is time we quit voting for the lesser of two evils," said Alvarez.
The campaign is expected to receive more prominent endorsements in South Florida as Election Day nears.
