(For immediate release)
The Libertarian Party of Miami-Dade County is condemning with a unanimous voice the move by the Board of County Commissioners to waste a rare budget surplus of $260,000 to increase its own discretionary spending.
At the last County Commission meeting of 2016, County Commissioners voted unanimously to take the surpluses of the Office of Commission Auditor, the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, the Protocol Division, and the Media Division budgets and distribute them among all 13 County Commissioners for their office budgets.
The Libertarian Party of Miami-Dade County strongly condemns this move, as discretionary spending by County Commissioners can often be related to corruption, nepotism, and corporate welfare. It was just a year ago that former Commissioner Juan Zapata was caught using his office funds to pay for personal classes at Harvard University.
On January 10th, the Executive Committee of the Libertarian Party of Miami-Dade County unanimously condemned the move and we now hope that the County will reconsider its move and use the surplus funds to pay down the county’s monumental debt.
County Commissioner Jean Monestime has shown to be a poor leader when it comes to managing taxpayers’ funds. It is with relief that we saw his term as Commission Chairman end and we hope the new leadership of the Board will provide a better service to the residents of Miami-Dade County.
